On Tuesday, February 16th we welcomed Brian Hayes MEP to Holmpatrick National School to speak to pupils from 3rd-6th class about Ireland in the EU. The pupils of 3rd-6th Class are currently taking part in the Blue Star Programme, which is a primary school initiative that aims to foster better knowledge, and understanding of the European Union and how it affects our lives. Pupils are challenged to get creative and think about Europe by carrying out projects in relation to four key elements: the history, geography, culture and creativity, and Institutions of the European Union.
Brian Hayes is from Dublin and is a member of Fine Gael. He is one of the eleven Irish M.E.P’S and one of three representing our constituency of Dublin since May 2014. He is a former Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin South West constituency, and served as Minister of State at the Department of Finance from 2011 to 2014.
We would like to thank Brian for taking time out of his busy schedule to view projects children have completed as part of the Blue Star Programme. In addition to this, Brian spoke to us about his life as an MEP. We all learned about the importance of the European Union for member states, the advantages of being part of the Union and how it helps in our everyday lives.
3rd-6th class thoroughly enjoyed Brian’s visit. We will remember his day in Holmpatrick National School. We hope he will too!
