Water Filtration

We learned about waste water treatment. Water is filtered through gravel and sand to clean any small parts of dirt. Our aim this morning was to use a filtering method to clean dirty water. For this experiment you need:  Plastic bottle and scissors or jar and funnel, dirty water, filter paper, cotton wool, stones and gravel.

  1. Cut the bottle into a jar and funnel and position as per the diagram below.
  2. Fold the filter paper in half and than divide it so that there are three pieces and one piece the other side.
  3. Dampen the edges of the filter paper.
  4.  Poor in half of the water and record what happened.
  5.  The same process using stones and gravel and sand and compare the defence.

Results: Both filters made the water cleaner but the filter  paper worked better.

Conclusion: We learned that dirt can be removed  from water by filters.
